ABL wins contract to build dental clinics (19th October 2010)

Posted By: ABL on Tue, 19 October 2010

Dunedin's Amalgamated Builders Ltd has been awarded a contract of nearly $2 million to build school dental clinics.

The Southern District Health Board is reducing the number of fixed dental clinics and increasing the use of mobile units.

The programme is part of a nationwide overhaul in how dental services are delivered to school children, with the emphasis on prevention, education, and input from parents.

The fixed clinics would have longer operating hours, and operate outside of the school calendar.

ABL director and area manager Richard Johnston said the contract was worth close to $2 million.

The health contract adds to a busy programme for the Dunedin firm, which includes the Regent Theatre, Dunedin Centre, municipal chambers and town hall upgrades.

Mr Johnston said it was possible the firm would employ extra staff in the new year.

At the least it helped secure the long-term future of the firm's existing employees in a tight building market.

In addition to building fixed clinics at Dunedin's Macandrew Intermediate, Taieri College in Mosgiel, Rosebank School in Balclutha, Oamaru North School, and Alexandra Primary School, the firm would set up about 20 sites to prepare them for mobile unit visits.

ABL is familiar with the project, having won earlier stages of the construction work.

SDHB oral health project manager Graham Bugler said he hoped that by the end of next year most of the facilities would be open.

"A handful of existing dental clinics will need to remain open until the mobile clinics that replace them are delivered in 2012, but the vast majority of Otago and Southland children and adolescents will have access to facilities that are at the forefront of modern standards by this time next year."

Mr Bugler said completion depended on finalising lease agreements with schools, and resource consent issues.

ABL was one of five tenderers for the final construction phase.

Pupils give new school A pass (12 October 2010)

The 430 pupils at Wanaka's new $21.5 million primary school gave it a resounding "cool" report card during their first day yesterday.

Playgrounds were a hive of activity as the children explored their new Ironside Dr environment.

Staff and parents spent the two- week school holiday relocating the school from its former Tenby St grounds and a special alfresco celebration was held for the new facility's first day.

About 150 parents and other members of the Wanaka community also took the opportunity for a guided tour of the new school.

Principal Wendy Bamford said the school would be officially opened between March and April by Education Minister Anne Tolley.

Yesterday's celebration was attended by MP Jacqui Dean. Board of trustees chairman Pete Bullen said Mrs Dean had supported the quest for a new primary school for the past five to six years.

"I'm thrilled to be invited here," Mrs Dean said.

"It's been a slog and the board of trustees and your principal have worked hard."

Mr Bullen said it had taken a long time "to get to this point in time. This is a wonderful new home to work, learn and playin".

The new school consists of six pods, each containing three to four classrooms, and can cater for 560 pupils.

Dr Bamford said travel plans incorporating walking and cycling routes had been completed, however, police would help monitor traffic flows during the next two weeks.

It was hoped work on the new school hall would start next month. "Watch this space," Dr Bamford and Mr Bullen said.
