Retirement village gets money injection from Rugby Southland

Invercargill’s Hawthorndale Care Village received the boost after the rugby organisation’s successful SBS Southland Stags Bunnings NPC Charity Campaign.

The campaign saw replica shirts sold, a jersey auction, a $1 for every tackle tally, and fan donations wracking up a mighty $18,323.80 for the cause.

Based on the Dutch care village model, Hawthornedale Care Village, which is under construction, will work to replicate everyday suburban life, playing host to cafes, theatres, gardens and hairdressers to help people feel at ease in their new homes.

One of the most significant values of the campaign was the widespread awareness it provided for dementia care and the Hawthorndale Care Village project, a spokesperson for Rugby Southland said.

Hawthorndale Care Village’s project lead Helen Robinson said they appreciated Rugby Southland's generosity.

"This substantial donation will significantly enhance our ability to provide high-quality care and support to our residents,” Robinson said.

“The funds will be used in the final stages of outfitting and preparing the village for the arrival of our residents in 2025.

“We are deeply thankful for Rugby Southland's commitment to our community."

Rugby Southland’s commercial and marketing manager Jack King said he was grateful to all the individuals, organisations, and fans who made the contribution possible.

“Rugby Southland has always believed in the power of community, and this donation is a testament to our commitment to giving back to those who need it most and are investing in our community,” King said.

“I would like to make special thanks to SBS Bank for their further support of the Hawthorndale Care Village, Paladin Sports for their work with us delivering this campaign and their generous donation, and lastly, our fans and sponsors who either donated or bided on the jerseys.

“We are privileged to be able to support the essential work of the Hawthorndale Care Village.”

Paladin Sports raised $4600 by donating $10 from each of the 460 replica jerseys sold during the Bunnings NPC season.

SBS Bank donated $1883 as part of their "Defend with Heart" campaign, where $1 was pledged for every successful tackle made by the SBS Bank Southland Stags in 2023.

More than $11,000 in profit from a jersey auction, and enthusiastic fans did the rest with game day donations.
