Richard Johnston

Managing Director

Richard Johnston brings to ABL over 30 years of experience in leadership roles in the construction industry.  Richard is a qualified Senior Quantity Surveyor, and has been directly involved with the building of numerous large projects throughout the South Island.  

Richard started with ABL in 1990 as a Senior Quantity Surveyor after coming back from seven years in Australia and the UK, four of which were spent managing consultant Quantity Surveying practices.

Bruce Middleton

Director & ICL Project Director

Bruce is one of ABL’s longest employees, having joined the team in 1974 just after ABL was born.

He has over 40 years’ construction industry experience and is a director and shareholder of the company.

Michael Manson

Financial Controller

Michael joined ABL in 2014.  He is responsible for the overall financial administration of all operating locations and is based in the Invercargill head office.

Michael is a qualified Chartered Accountant and leads the administration team providing ABL with its accounting and financial transactional processing, and supports the management team in business financial planning. 

Chris Dowall

Otago General Manager

Chris started his professional life as a carpenter, completing eighteen years in the commercial and residential fields before retraining as a Quantity Surveyor.

Chris joined ABL in early 2000 and quickly worked his way up to the position of Senior Quantity Surveyor, aided by his practical experience.

Now he is the Otago General Manager, handling the operations of the Dunedin regional office.

Gareth Wilmshurst

Canterbury General Manager

Gareth is the General Manager of the Canterbury branch and is motivated by ABL’s client-first attitude and approach. Over the years Gareth has worked on several highly sensitive and political projects and understands the complex layers of stakeholder management.

Gareth’s experience has gained him great understanding of complex projects and has grown his wide range of skillsets; from estimation, programming, contracts management, to quantity surveying. He is technically competent in all fields and is personally passionate about construction.

Brad Harper

Southland General Manager

Brad joined the ABL team in 1999 spending eight years working on site gaining his carpentry qualification and practical site experience before progressing into the Invercargill office as a Quantity Surveyor. Brad completed an SIT diploma and he has been working as a Quantity Surveyor for 12 years with recently being promoted to our Southland General Manager.

Brad has an excellent understanding of construction techniques, modern design approaches, building quantities, contract administration and management.
