George Forbes Building Refurbishment at Lincoln University

A vibrant and bustling new student hub, comprising a café, mini-theatre, modern comfortable seating areas, workspaces, a garden courtyard and much more. 

The layout of the new ground floor space, aptly named ‘Grounded’, was heavily influenced by student feedback during a comprehensive process of consultation and participation, and now reflects the particular needs and preferences of a world-class student experience.

The new space provides the perfect mix of areas for relaxation and recreation, while also providing places to work and collaborate with others.

Areas that received attention included

  • Partial Demolition of interior and exterior elements the south and south-western areas to the ground floor podium.
     
  • Partial Demolition of interior and exterior elements to the south of the level 01 podium and Seismic Strengthening and Upgrade works to the same. An extension to the south of the ground floor podium.
     
  • New ground-floor fit-out including new toilet core and various shared meeting and gathering spaces. The existing cafe, servery and lounge space to be hoarding off and to remain fully functional throughout the contract works.
     
  • Two small extensions to the level 01 podium to the east and west and fit-out of existing meeting and entertainment rooms.
     
  • Repairs and seismic strengthening to parts of the level 01 roof. Re-roof and seismic strengthening above the level 01 council room.

Work was carried out and sequenced to allow for the continued occupation of the areas that were outside the contract scope of works. Access was maintained from end to end of the building to facilitate university activities to continue throughout the construction period.
