Projects - Invercargill Central Business District
Invercargill Central Business District
Amalgamated Builders Limited (ABL) responded to an open Tender “Request for Proposal” to deliver the first two stages of the Invercargill Central redevelopment. The redevelopment was a 3 staged contract constructing a new Farmers department store in conjunction with a multi-story car park and retail shopping precinct.
The site was handed over from the demolition and piling contractors to ABL, the entire city block redevelopment was reconstructed between Esk Street and Tay Street, bordered by Dee Street and Kelvin Street. The 21,500m2 site was construction central for 3 years led by ABL and was the largest construction project undertaken in Southlands history since the Tiwai Aluminium Smelter in the 1970s.
The progress was so rapid ABL worked successfully with the project team and consultants resolving supply and labour shortages and negotiated the 3rd stage delivering the retail shopping complex and food precinct.
The preservation of the Esk Street heritage façades alongside the multiple modern day façades and specialist cladding techniques combining the city’s rich heritage and history with modern day architecture.
This spacious vibrant indoor shopping centre provides a multi-level department store, retail shops, tech stores, hair and beauty, a variety of food court outlets, restaurants, a movie theatre, street scape furniture and a covered multi-level car parking facility.
Constructed during the COVID 19 pandemic where the industries supply chain and labour shortages were the worst the country has ever seen, ABL managed to keep this project on track and deliver. This project is now widely known to be one of the few major projects in New Zealand to be successfully completed on schedule during the COVID 19 pandemic.
ABL’s commitment to this project was significant and on a scale most construction business will not experience, our dedication is measured by our performance and on this project the results speak for themselves.
This project not only won a Gold Award, and was the National Category Winner for Retail section at the New Zealand Commercial Project Awards, but also came away with a Special Award for the project.
