From a modest 1960s Brockville general grocery shop to one of the largest independent food distributors in the South Island, Dunedin-headquartered Kaan's Catering Supplies embarked on a more than $10 million expansion programme, including this approximately 5000m2 sized building that included a cool store, freezer, chiller, dry goods and warehousing storage facility, plus office space and staff amenities to house their growing staff numbers.

The building was built with a mixture of precast panels, structural steel, and cool store panels, as well as traditional timber framed construction.

The rapidly growing business, needed to begin operations from the new facility before the building's construction was completed. With this operational requirement in mind, the project was designed to include a staged handover - a process that was successfully implemented.
