Owheo Building - Design and Build
This project brief was to design and build new layout to suit the relocation of the School of Surveying into the Owheo Building and improve spatial efficiency in the footprint for the existing School of Computing.
Demolition and construction took place to build an easily-accessed field store, and two large-format computer lab spaces, a rooftop GPS platform staff offices and workspaces, for the School of Surveying.
The School of Computer required 5 CAL (Computer Aided Learning) labs, a new server room, post-graduate research labs, reconfiguration of existing offices, kitchen, tea rooms and meeting rooms and a set of toilets.
A Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Mixed Reality (MR) research labs was constructed explore the intersection of human behaviour and immersive technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)
The contract also allowed for a replacement and upgrade of the Networking System in the building, introducing new data cabling and Wi-Fi throughout the building.
Each of the rooms required specific redesign of electrical and mechanical services to suit the increased loads of users and equipment, and later in the project access control requirements were introduced to a number of doors to provide 24/7 access to the computer labs.
Overarching all of the project was co-ordination with the clients AV Contractor and spatial planning with the furniture suppliers, and relocation of users within the building to achieve minimal disruption to all, and allow the successful restacking of two schools into the same building.
The project required hands on day to day planning and communications with the client’s team to achieve room by room deliveries, handovers, and relocations.
The project was delivered on time and within the clients proposed construction budget.
