Otago Stadium - Concrete and Precast
After many years of planning, design and local controversy the Dunedin City Council engaged Hawkins Construction to construct a new multipurpose stadium for the city.
The innovative stadium was the first in the world to have a fixed roof and grow natural grass. The roof was constructed of pressurized pillows of an innovative transparent roofing product called ETFE supported by tubular steel arch trusses.
The Otago Stadium was designated as a venue for the 2011 Rugby Word Cup event and the completion date for the project was governed by the kick-off date of 10th September 2011.
The project commenced in May 2009 with the driving of 609 concrete piles to a depth of approximately 18 metres and was officially opened on 5th August 2011 with no serious harm incidents. Amalgamated Builders Ltd was engaged by Hawkins as principal subcontractor for the insitu concrete work and precast erection.
ABL foundation work commenced in July 2009 and the first concrete floor slab toppings at level 5 were poured on 5th February 2010.
